I get a lot of people wanting to know the best beach volleyball ball to use. You do not want to take your indoor volleyball ball to the beach to use as an outdoor ball.

What are the differences between an indoor ball and a beach volleyball ball?

There are many differences between indoor and outdoor balls. The outdoor beach volleyball is lighter, softer, less inflated and larger. A regulation indoor ball will be hard, small and heavy compared to an official beach volley ball.

The best volleyball ball to use for beach is the Official Wilson AVP beach volleyball ball. This is the white and yellow ball that is outlined in black and says Official Game Ball on it. But Wilson also makes a replica ball that looks exactly like the Official ball but it is made of the worst material on earth. It fills like the bladder of the Replica ball is made of bricks because it does not bounce. Never buy the Replica game ball, it is way cheaper ($15 to $25 bucks) but it is one of the worst balls ever made. Make sure that your ball says OFFICIAL on it. The official ball on the other hand is the best ball ever made and it is what is used by the professional beach volleyball players in the AVP.

One huge problem that you will run into if you don’t live in California is where to buy beach volleyballs. The best place to get them is at a Costco in California but if you live outside of the sunny state of CA you can find them online. Most stores are not going to carry the Official Wilson beach volleyball. Buying a volleyball like the AVP volleyball used by the professionals can be a little harder than you might expect. The reason local stores will not have the ball is because there is a ball known as the replica ball which looks just like the real deal but is very cheaply made and is of very poor quality. This cheap replica ball costs about a third of the price of the real ball. So many people purchase the ball thinking that it is the Official ball used by professional beach volleyball players. After one pass you can tell that this ball is NOT a good ball.

Save yourself the money and the bruised arms from playing with the dreaded replica ball and buy a volleyball online. You can usually find them cheaper online than a local store would have charged in the first place. You can buy them here:

If you are making your own sand volleyball court or just looking for beach volleyball nets to improve an existing court, you need to know some key factors before you buy beach volleyball nets that will just break down in a month. If you get the right volleyball net, it will last at least 3 years.

Don’t go cheap on the net, especially if you want anyone to come back to your sand volleyball court to play. So, you did your research on the sand volleyball court dimensions and put up your volleyball posts and now you just need the net. A little research will show that there are some very cheap nets and some very expensive ones. While there might be some volleyball nets for as low as 20 bucks, they are that cheap for a reason. The don’t have wire in them so you can crank them and they don’t have wooden dowels at the ends to keep the net tight. The worst thing is having a loose net that you can’t play balls out of.

Beach Volleyballs

One thing that you may have noticed if you watched Olympic beach volleyball is that they used a different ball than the Wilson beach volleyball used in all the AVP tournament in the U.S. You might not be aware but outdoor volleyballs are very different than indoor balls. The outdoor beach volleyball is slightly larger, weighs less and should always be less inflated than an indoor volleyball.

Beach Volleyball Net

The volleyball net is the same height in the sand as it is for indoor. This means that it is 7’4 5/8″ for women and 7’11 5/8″ for men. This measurement is done from the top of levelly raked sand. You can see why with your volleyball training-how to jump higher is going to be a very important part of your game.

Beach Volleyball Court Lines

The size of the beach volleyball court is much smaller than indoor courts. If you go play at the beach the city usually provides the nets but you have to bring your own boundary lines. A great thing about playing sand volleyball is that you don’t have to waste money on volleyball shoes. Although sometimes the sand is very hot or very cold and you may choose to wear sandsocks. Sand socks are especially made for beach volleyball players to wear in the sand and protect your feet from harsh weather conditions.

Learning how to play beach volleyball can be very fun if you are able to practice with people at the same skill level or preferably a higher skill level. You will get better a lot quicker by playing with good experienced players. Remember to learn all the beach volleyball rules before you start trying to compete in the sand.
