The hand signals are pretty much universal and they are not like the hand signals in indoor volleyball.

Lets say that the blocker is up at the net and his teammate is serving the ball. He will show his teammate what areas of the court he is going to block. His left hand will show how he will block the guy on the left side and his right hand will correspond with the player on the right side of the court.

There are only a few options for blocking. If he shows one finger, it means that he is blocking the line on that player. If he shows 2 fingers it means that he will block the angle of the hitter. Whatever he blocks means that you will cover the opposite side of the court from what he is blocking.

So if he shows one finger on his left hand and you server the left player you will have to stay on the right side to play defense and trust that your partner will block anything on the other side of the court.

If your partner shows a fist it means that he will try to block ball and an open hand means he will not block and will pull back.
