Are you wondering how to set a beach volleyball? It might look easy but it takes a lot of practice to make it look as effortlessly as the pros make it seem. Outdoor setting is not the same as a volleyball set you would see indoors. The indoor game has no sort of doubling rule for setting a ball. For this reason you will see very sloppy looking sets where the ball comes out of the setters hand spinning like crazy and it’s okay. If you have learned how to set a volleyball the proper way for indoor volleyball, you will have to unlearn everything you know and start doing volleyball setting drills to perfect the beach volleyball set.

If you are on the sand, you have to set very cleanly. This means you are allowed to hold the ball for a little longer so that you can release it smoothly with no spin. Although there is no rule that states a beach volleyball set can’t spin, if it does spin it’s usually an indication that you doubled the ball and that is illegal in beach volleyball rules.

Some volleyball setting techniques that might help you are to let your elbows flare out to the sides and try to grab the ball as wide as possible. Let the ball touch the part of your hand from the thumb to the first finger. You know that flap of skin that stretches when you make an “L” sign with your thumb and first finger? That should be touching the ball. Open up your hands and fingers wide and let the ball rest in there so you are touching each side of the ball. Then it is more of an arm action than a wrist action to actually set the ball. Another thing that might help you is that your pinkie will probably never touch the ball. Everyone sets a little bit different but for the most part it just takes practice. Get a ball and set against the wall or in the air until you get the hang of it. Hang in there, one day it will just click and you will wonder why it was ever so difficult.
