If you want to play real beach volleyball you will need some good beach volleyball boundary line. The volleyball lines mark the court dimensions of the playing area.

The most popular type of line is the 2 inch thick volleyball lines. When you have 2″ volleyball lines you can see them easier and they stay flat easier than the 1 inch or 1.5 inch lines.

They come in a variety of colors from red, black, blue, yellow and green. You will find that the volleyball ropes are much cheaper and that is because they suck. You want to get the webbing and the wider the better. There is also a court line carrying bag to make it much easier for transportation. If you have a sand volleyball court at home, you will just need the lines.

If you play real sand volleyball you will be looking for the short court lines, this means that they measure 8m X 16m and they are the pro lines. You can get the bigger court size that are the 2 inch pro adjustable lines if you are going to enlarge the court to play with more than 2 people on each side. Remember that the web style of volleyball court boundary lines is better. You will need some sand anchors as well as your standard or replacement court lines.

Who Will Coach NCAA Collegiate Sand Volleyball?

Athletic directors are very split with the decision on whether or not to add sand volleyball as the next NCAA sport. There is an override vote happening tomorrow (Jan. 15) that will determine if sand volleyball will become a sport for women to play in college.

If it does survive the override, who will coach sand volleyball? Are athletic directors smart enough to realize that sand volleyball and indoor volleyball are 2 completely different sports and being qualified to coach indoor does NOT qualify you to coach beach volleyball? You would think they would realize that the sports are very different but they simply hear the word “volleyball” and they think it is the same sport.

I would be more than happy to coach a collegiate sand volleyball team and I would do so better than any indoor coach that doesn’t know the game. The rules are different, the setting is different, the approach is different, the strategy is different. I would never try to coach indoor volleyball because I am not experienced enough with it. Having indoor coaches try to recruit sand volleyball players is another horrible idea. You can’t get someone just because they are tall or just because they can set well. Each player has to have all skills or their weaknesses will be found out and exploited very quickly.

Vote NO on Collegiate Sand Volleyball Override

Collegiate volleyball has 1 more hurdle to jump over before becoming a collegiate sport. Schools are trying to override collegiate sand volleyball and they are voting on January 15 of 2010. If the override gets enough votes, sand volleyball will not be accepted as a collegiate sport. Please contact your local universities and share your desire for college sand volleyball to be a sport. Jump Training Workouts

Whether you play indoor or beach volleyball one skill remains constant and that is your ability to jump high. This is a skill just like any other skill you would encounter in a sport because you can train and improve your vertical jump. Don’t believe anyone that says that you have to be born being able to jump high or that it is purely genetics. Yes genetics can help, but even if you were not blessed with great genetics for jumping you can increase your vertical leap a ton.

The best way to go about increasing you vertical is to train specifically for it. Don’t just assume that if you play a lot of volleyball and jump all the time that you will naturally jump higher. This is true to a certain extent but it does not mean that you will get amazing results, it means that you will jump a little higher after a year of playing all the time. But the possibility is there for you to get inches every week on your jump height. Eventually you will hit a plateau but that shouldn’t happen until your jumping very high, and by very high I mean in the 40 inches range. So chances are you are currently no where near your potential. The human body is amazing and what it can accomplish is surprising. You simply need to know how to jump higher by doing jump training workouts that work.

I thought I would go ahead and show you a picture of me playing sand volleyball at the apartment complex where I learned how to play beach volleyball. Oddly enough I learned how to play beach volleyball in Utah of all places and the apartment complex is called Carriage Cove. I learned how to play pretty quickly because I had good teachers that included some players that are currently in the AVP such as Casey Patterson and Bryan Stewart. Some other players that learned how to play the game at that same complex are Casey Jennings, Casey Patterson, Bryan Stewart and I’ve even played a few sand volleyball games with the indoor legend Ryan Millar.

Understanding the Beach Volleyball Game

The beach volleyball game is very fun once you understand how it is played. There are 2 teams that are each consisted of 2 players divided by a volleyball net. The court size is about 3 feet narrower and shorter on each side of the net than it is for indoor volleyball. The point of the game is to make the ball hit the sand on the opponents side of the net inside the boundary lines. The games are to 21 and you have to win by 2. Every serve results in a point, this is called rally scoring. Long ago it used to be that only the team that served the ball could win the point, but that was done away with years ago.

The server must be behind the back court line. Once you throw the ball up in the air to serve it, you must hit it. If you don’t like your toss and decide to catch it or let it hit the ground, you will lose the point.

Each team is allowed 3 hits to get the ball back of the net to the other teams side. One person cannot hit it 2 times in a row and you do not have to take all 3 hits before sending the ball back to the other side. The ideal way to do it is for the first person to bump, or pass it to their teammate. That teammate will then set the ball so that the person that passed it can spike it down into the opponents side.

A block counts as 1 of your 3 hits, unlike indoor volleyball where the block does not count as 1 of your 3 hits.

The setting is a little bit different for sand volleyball, you are allowed to cushion it a little bit more so that it comes out very clean without spinning. The beach volleyball set should look smooth and not be held for too long.

Once rule in beach volleyball that is different is that you are never allowed to open hand tip the ball over the net. You may shoot the ball from your palm or use your knuckles (cameltoe) to hit it over the net, but no finger action is allowed on the ball.

You are never allowed to touch the net, the only exception is if the ball hits the net into you. The nets are usually very tight so this does not happen often. Try staying close to the net when jumping to block and reaching over the net with your arms instead of jumping towards the net.
