The official AVP beach volleyball court dimensions are:

8 Meters by 16 Meters.

When playing in the sand you have to use beach volleyball lines that are made of webbing. It is preferred that you get the 2 inch webbing because they are easier to see and look more professional.

This goes for all outdoor volleyball when playing 2 on 2 either in sand or grass.

Indoor volleyball court measurements are 9 Meters by 18 Meters.

If you are not aware of how big a meter is it is 3.28 feet, so 8 meters is 26.24 feet. This means that each side of the net is 1 meter narrower and 1 meter shorter. This allows 2 people to better defend their side of the net while on defense and makes for more interesting rallies for the players and fans. It just doesn’t make any sense to play on the same size of court that takes 6 people to defend when you only have 1 blocker and 1 defender.

Another good tid bit of information to be aware of is the official net height, unlike the beach volleyball court size, the beach volleyball net height is the same as it is for indoor volleyball for men and women.
Men’s Net Height = 7’11″ 5/8 inches
Women’s Net Height = 7’4″ 1/8 inches

2010 AVP Fort Lauderdale Tournament

The 2010 season is already starting and the qualifiers are going on today. There have been a lot of changes in some of the top teams in the AVP this season. Casey Patterson and Ty Loomis split up after 1 short season together where they won 1 tournament in 2009. Ty Loomis is playing with Matt Prosser and Casey Patterson is playing with Kevin Wong, making them 1 the tallest team on tour. They both stand around 6’7″ which means that opposing teams are forced to serve the tall player. They both side out very well and have amazing ball control. They are going to be a very hard team to beat in 2010. Casey may be better at defense than he is at blocking which means that they will be strong on offense and defense. Look for them to be in the top 4 this season.

Another player to watch from Utah is Bryan Stewart. He measures 6’5″ but has one of the most impressive blocks on the AVP. He is a new player but saw a little success last year and is looking to make much more money in 2010. He is starting the season off by playing with Daniel Dalanhese who is also from Utah. They have a very difficult starting position in the Fort Lauderdale tournament by playing against Ty Loomis first and then against team giant, Casey Patterson and Kevin Wong. Action starts tomorrow for all of the pre-qualified players.

Beach Volleyball Rules

Here are the basic beach volleyball rules that you need to know:

Not Allowed:

Open-hand tips
Setting the serve
Doubling the set
Side setting over the net

The most common mistake of new players is the setting. They set the ball with their hands too often and in times when it is illegal. There are sometimes that a set is okay but only if it is perfect, like on a free ball that is not hard driven. It is not against the rules to set a ball that comes over net but you have to do it with more perfection than a normal set that your partner passes to you. This means that if you don’t have perfect nectar hands, don’t ever set the ball with your hands when playing outdoor volleyball. You need to just arm set until you practice enough to have clean sets with no spin.

When blocking, if you touch the ball it counts as 1 of your 3 hits. This is not like indoor where you get 3 more touches after the block. This is another big difference to get used to.

You may go under the net all you want as long as it doesn’t interfere with the players on the opposing team.

Other than those rules most of the other rules still apply. You always do rally scoring but you go to 21 and then the 3rd game is to 15.

There are side switches every 7 points so that nobody is stuck with the bad wind side or the sun in their faces for a whole game.

If you want to play real beach volleyball you will need some good beach volleyball boundary line. The volleyball lines mark the court dimensions of the playing area.

The most popular type of line is the 2 inch thick volleyball lines. When you have 2″ volleyball lines you can see them easier and they stay flat easier than the 1 inch or 1.5 inch lines.

They come in a variety of colors from red, black, blue, yellow and green. You will find that the volleyball ropes are much cheaper and that is because they suck. You want to get the webbing and the wider the better. There is also a court line carrying bag to make it much easier for transportation. If you have a sand volleyball court at home, you will just need the lines.

If you play real sand volleyball you will be looking for the short court lines, this means that they measure 8m X 16m and they are the pro lines. You can get the bigger court size that are the 2 inch pro adjustable lines if you are going to enlarge the court to play with more than 2 people on each side. Remember that the web style of volleyball court boundary lines is better. You will need some sand anchors as well as your standard or replacement court lines.

Who Will Coach NCAA Collegiate Sand Volleyball?

Athletic directors are very split with the decision on whether or not to add sand volleyball as the next NCAA sport. There is an override vote happening tomorrow (Jan. 15) that will determine if sand volleyball will become a sport for women to play in college.

If it does survive the override, who will coach sand volleyball? Are athletic directors smart enough to realize that sand volleyball and indoor volleyball are 2 completely different sports and being qualified to coach indoor does NOT qualify you to coach beach volleyball? You would think they would realize that the sports are very different but they simply hear the word “volleyball” and they think it is the same sport.

I would be more than happy to coach a collegiate sand volleyball team and I would do so better than any indoor coach that doesn’t know the game. The rules are different, the setting is different, the approach is different, the strategy is different. I would never try to coach indoor volleyball because I am not experienced enough with it. Having indoor coaches try to recruit sand volleyball players is another horrible idea. You can’t get someone just because they are tall or just because they can set well. Each player has to have all skills or their weaknesses will be found out and exploited very quickly.

Vote NO on Collegiate Sand Volleyball Override

Collegiate volleyball has 1 more hurdle to jump over before becoming a collegiate sport. Schools are trying to override collegiate sand volleyball and they are voting on January 15 of 2010. If the override gets enough votes, sand volleyball will not be accepted as a collegiate sport. Please contact your local universities and share your desire for college sand volleyball to be a sport.
