How to Hit a Volleyball
Many beginners want to know how to hit a volleyball and it may be surprising to think about this if you are an experienced player that has been coached from a young age. But, not everyone has the opportunity to be training in volleyball and so they end up thinking that you spike a volleyball with a closed fist.
This site covered how to spike a volleyball in the sand and this would fall under the same category but we will revisit the issue for all the new readers and new beach volleyball players.
When you spiking a volleyball you should have an open hand and upon contact with the ball your hand should wrap around the ball, almost as if you were palming it. You don’t hit with a closed fist or with a stiff open hand where only the padding of your palm touches the ball. When you are spiking you want the ball to have top spin so that it drops faster and this is achieved by hitting on the top of the ball and allowing you whole hand, fingers and all, to come in contact with the ball as you snap your wrist to give it more top spin. This way you can direct exactly where the ball will go.
There is a difference between the volleyballs used for beach and indoor play. An indoor ball will be smaller and heavier so you will have to take this into consideration when playing.
You must be able to contact the ball above the net in order to be a great hitter/spiker. Find more on jump training for volleyball here.
