How to Play Volleyball on the Beach
Many people enjoy playing volleyball for fun and some people like to play it competitively. There are many differences between beach volleyball and indoor volleyball. You may know how to play volleyball when you have 5 other teammates to depend on but the game changes when you make up half of your team. This means that you should contact the ball at least once on every single play. The key to being a great beach volleyball player is being able to do everything well instead on perfecting one thing while having all other skills lacking. For example lets take you typical indoor volleyball hitter. They are very good at spiking a volleyball really hard. But when you have them set it turns out they are a popcorn setter (the balls are set all over the place like popcorn popping). If you can’t set you will never win a beach volleyball tournament even at the B level. I would take a good setter as my teammate over a great hitter any day of the week. In fact I would take a good passer over a great hitter as well. A great indoor hitter means they are an average hitter when they play in the sand because they can’t jump as high and can’t get their timing right to spike the ball.
So how do you play volleyball on the beach? You do exactly that, you play volleyball on the beach and you stop playing on the hard court. If you truly want to make the transition from indoor volleyball to beach volleyball you need to hang up the volleyball shoes and only play in the sand. You don’t want to keep messing up your timing for both sports and end up not being able to play either. You need to get away from the bad indoor habits like setting every ball that comes your way and start using your arms to pass the ball. You will also need to get used to a soft ball and don’t ever take your rock hard indoor ball to the beach! Spend the 40 bucks and buy an official Wilson beach volleyball. Make sure you learn the differences of indoor volleyball and beach volleyball rules before going to the beach to play.
