NCAA Sand Volleyball Coaching

Published by on August 8, 2009 06:02 pm under NCAA Sand Volleyball

beach volleyball setWhen the NCAA announced that sand volleyball in college would become official as early as 2010 many questions arose.  Who will coach sand volleyball and are the indoor players going to be allowed to play on the sand team?
Volleyball Coaching
To coach volleyball you must have a strong understanding of the game, it’s strategies and it’s techniques. We contacted athletic directors from many colleges that will be implementing sand volleyball and asked them who would be coaching the sand volleyball and the response we got was surprising. Most universities say they will not hire a sand volleyball coach but have the indoor coach take on the responsibility of coaching the beach volleyball players. A person that can’t even properly perform an outdoor set will be trying to teach others how to execute it? Most indoor volleyball coaches don’t know the first thing about the sand game and they are going to be the ones coaching? This just doesn’t make sense. If the NCAA wants sand volleyball to succeed as a collegiate sport they will need to hire new coaches that specialize in sand volleyball coaching. You wouldn’t expect a table tennis instructor to teach collegiate tennis would you? Then you shouldn’t expect an indoor coach to have any sand volleyball coaching experience. Indoor coaches should stick to their volleyball rotations and strategies for the indoor game and not get involved with the beach volleyball game that is a completely different sport.

Beyond the NCAA, I wish the US would better adopt beach volleyball. The USA wins two gold medals and the AVP is begging for more attendance. If we can’t win over the US audience professionally, how can we expect the NCAA to be truly successful?

I hope the NCAA’s approach to sand volleyball is to be a profitable entity. I believe that is part of the reason for ‘shared’ coaches from indoor to outdoor. Take it slow, do it right, and there is opportunity for long-term success.

Thanks for the comment Coach Rey. I agree that the U.S. does need to show a little more support. I see beach volleyball growing in popularity little by little and hopefully ESPN will start showing highlights of some AVP matches which might help get a bigger fan base.

Its about time they let sand come into play.

I believe it will make enough to maybe even take over the indoor game in popularity.
