Playing Volleyball in Sand
When playing volleyball in the sand you have to learn the game all over again. You no longer do rolls when you “dive” for a volleyball, now you actually dive for the ball. The great thing about beach ball is that it is very forgiving. You will see old people playing volleyball on the beach without a care in the world about getting injured. The reason is that most sprained ankles happen when you come down on someones foot or shoe that has landed on your side of the net. In beach volleyball, if someone happens to land on your side, it doesn’t usually harm you because their foot buried in the sand and you can land on it without even noticing most times.
I hate getting injured, the last time I played indoor volleyball some kid landed on my side and messed up my ankle. Now when I wear shoes to go running I can feel that something is not right with my ankle and that happened 3 months ago. So I swore off indoor volleyball because of the high injury risk and the difficulty of finding 11 other people that all know how to play good volleyball. Beach volleyball only requires me to find 3 more people that are good.
Beach volleyball does require you to be better at the sport of volleyball in all areas. You can’t just pass well and expect to win any games. You have to be able to pass, set and hit. On top of that, you have to be able to either block or dig very well. So there is no hiding your weaknesses behind other players like you can in the indoor game.
Are you short or do you have a hard time jumping high enough to spike a volleyball? I have many people come to me and ask, how can I jump higher in the sand? The answer is that you have to do your volleyball training in the sand to jump higher. This means plyometric workouts and jump training drills need to be done in the sand whenever possible. This is easy for people living in California but if it snows in the winter or you don’t have sand near it makes it a little difficult. Following a jump training program is a great way to increase your vertical leap. Click Here to see the Jump Manual which is an ideal workout for volleyball players wanting to jump higher.
