Proper Jumping Form for Beach Volleyball
Everyone that plays beach volleyball wants to learn how to jump higher. Proper jumping form can improve you jump height significantly. If you already have good form you will not see as great of an increase your vertical leaping ability than someone that has bad jump form.
Lets look at the proper jumping form for beach volleyball compared to indoor volleyball jumping form.
In the beach you will not be using the same approach as you would on a hard surface for obvious reasons. You can’t convert your horizontal speed into upward lift as easily in the sand because the sand won’t allow it. So in beach volleyball you have to learn to plant harder just before take-off. This means that your last 2 steps will be like a hard stomp or a little jump where both feet hit the sand at almost the same time.
In indoor your last 2 steps are one right after the other quickly but never at the same time. On the beach you will jump higher the more you can pack the sand down under your feet right before you jump. This is a technique that will help you feel less like you are sinking in the sand and actually get out of it.
Your arm swing is another area that can help you get a lot higher and is very important in beach volleyball. When you approach you want to throw your arms back behind you while keeping them as straight as possible. Then when you bring them forward they will help propel you further in the air. You want to make sure that your arm are up above your head before your feet leave the sand.
One of the most important things to focus on is making sure that both your arms go up. Once they both go up and have helped your jump you can then cock your hitting hand back. People often make the mistake of not getting there opposite hand to go above their head and this prevents you from jumping as high as you could.
