Sand Volleyball in College?
Yes it’s true, sand volleyball is approved to be a collegiate sport starting as soon as 2010. The NCAA has announced that sand volleyball in college will become a reality. It’s amazing that sand volleyball isn’t already a collegiate sport seeing as how there are way more professional beach volleyball players in the U.S. than the 15 professional indoor players on the U.S. team.
Many question come into play when considering sand volleyball at Universities. What will they wear? I would assume that they will wear bikinis just like for the FIVB. There are only 2 people per team so the set up will be like a tennis match would be set up. The biggest question is who is going to coach the sand volleyball teams? I have heard some athletic directors saying that their indoor volleyball coaches will be coaching the sand players. This is a great mistake for many reasons, the main reason being that indoor coaches are not qualified to coach beach volleyball. The beach volleybal rules are completely different and the practice would be nothing like that of an indoor practice. Beach volleyball drills are very different from learning how to role on a hard court and run plays with fake hits. Volleyball training to jump higher in sand requires a completely different approach than indoor. Learning how to set in beach volleyball is just one more thing among the others listed that an indoor coach will not be able to teach. In order for the sport to flourish each university will need to hire a sand volleyball coach that knows the outdoor game of volleyball and that teach the correct principals involved.
